sawUniversityofLifeSciences(SGGW);amemberofthe

PolishAcademyofSciencessince1965.In1938,hedeveloped

anewtechniqueofagriculturalaccounting.

Hisyouthwasspentina20-hectareStaryZamekmanor,the

remainsofadestroyedfamilialholdingintheLucynówpoviatin

PolishLivonia.Itwastherethathebegangrowinghiseconomic

andagriculturalinterestsandgainedhisfirstexperiencesinman-

aginganagriculturalholding.Afterhisfather’sdeathin1918,his

motherleftLivoniaalongwithherfamilyandmovedtoWarsaw.Ryszardenrolledtothe

WojciechGórskigymnasiumandgainedhisbaccalaureatein1912.

Giventheunexpectedopportunityofinheritinglandafterhismother’schildless

brother,afterpassingthebaccalaureateexamandseveralmonthsofagriculturalprac-

tice,RyszardhadchosentoenrolltotheAgriculturalfacultyoftheSGGW

.Hefinished

hisstudiesin1926andgainedanagriculturalengineerdiploma(equivalenttoamaster’s

degree).Duringhisstudies,actingontheadviceofprof.StefanMoszczeński,atthebe-

ginningofthethirdyearofhisstudieshetookonthepositionofajuniorassistantatthe

DepartmentofRuralEconomicsattheSGGW

.Leadingclassesonagriculturalcalcula-

tions,theprofitabilityofproductiondepartmentsandbranches,andcreatingstatistical

materialsforeconometricresearchduringthelastyearofagriculturalstudieshadwhet-

tedhisappetiteforscientificandeducationalwork.Todeepenhiseconomicknowledge,

hesimultaneouslystudiedforayearattheHigherSchoolofEconomics(nowadays:

WarsawSchoolofEconomics).

TwoyearsofworkattheuniversityhadfurtherstrengthenedRyszardMantauffel’s

opinionthatscientificandeducationalworkintheareaoffarmeconomicsandorganiza-

tionrequirespracticalexperience.Therefore,withprof.Moszczeński’spermission,he

ceasedhisworkattheuniversityandtookupagriculturalwork.Hereturnedtoacadem-

iain1948,after22years.Inthatsameyear,heachievedadoctoraldegreeinagricultural

sciences,basedonhisworkAttemptatfindinganorganicmethodfortheprofitabilityof

variousbranchesofruralfarmswrittenunderthesupervisionofProf.WiktorSchrammat

theA.MickiewiczUniversityinPoznan.Hecouldnotworkonitwithprof.Moszczeński,

whodiedin1946.Ryszardgainedthedoctorhabilitatustitlein1960,afterithadbeen
