Abstract.Thisisanaccountofmyscientificandpersonalfriendshipwith
Prof.Andrzej(Andy)AleksanderLasotafrom1977untilhisdeath28De-
cember,2006.Itisatalethatfascinatesmebecauseoftheintertwinedlinks
betweenmanypeoplebothEastandWestofseveralgenerations,anditil-
lustrateswhatIfeelisthestrengthandbeautyofthepersonalsideofthe
scientificendeavor.
Thiscontributionisalmostidenticaltothepaper“AdventuresinPoland:
HavingfunanddoingresearchwithAndrzejLasota”,MatematykaStosowana8
(2007),5–32.Itisinnowaytobeconsideredanewcontribution,butisrather
arecordofthesecondAnnualLectureCommemoratingProfessorAndrzej
LasotagiveninKatowiceatUniwersytetŚląskion16January,2009.
1.Prologue
On28December,2006Andrzej(Andy)AleksanderLasotadiedofaheart
attack.Ilostoneofmyclosestfriendsandavaluedcolleaguewhohadapro-
foundinfluenceonmylifeandmycareer.Whatfollowsisachronicleofmy
travelsthroughsciencewithAndyfromthetimeIfirstmethimin1977.
Basedonmyreckoning,wespent471daystogetheroverthose29years,and
theywerefulloffunandfrustrationforbothofus.
InwhatfollowsItrytogivefeelingofthepersonalsideofhowourfriend-
shipandresearchcollaborationdevelopedandflourishedandevolvedoverthe
years,aswellasindicatingsomeofthemanyscientificendeavorsthatwe
immersedourselvesin.Ibelievethatmyaccountisaccurate1.
