Introduction
Tisbookistheresultofaseriesofconferencesheldinthelastfew
yearsattheCollegiumArtesLiberales,UniversityofWarsaw,orga-
nizedbytheTechno-HumanitiesLabasapartoftheprojectcalled
uTechnologyandSocialization”.Fromitsinception,theproject’saim
wastointerrogatethedilerentwaysinwhichtechnologyespecially
digitaltechnologyshapestoday’ssocialandpoliticallandscapein
atheoreticalandpracticalway.
Westartedfromasetofsimpleintuitions,whichnevertheless
gaveaveryconcreteshapetoourthinking.Werefusedtothinkin
waysthatwouldproposeastrictcaesurabetweenthehumanandthe
technological,betweentheartificialandthesocial;rather,wetried
toopenourreflectiontowaysinwhichthosedimensionsintertwine,
creatingvariousimpureformsandhybrids.Wealsorejectedthe
technophobicvisionoftechnologyasathreattothehumancondition;
instead,wesoughtoutproofsthatitenablesnewformsofsocializa-
tionandenhancesthosethatalreadyexist.
Tetermusocialization”itselfisborrowedfromthesociologyof
GeorgSimmel,followinghissuggestionnottotalkaboutsociety
(Gesellschaft)butabouttheformsofsocialization(Vergesellschaftung).
TismannerofthinkingcanalsobefoundintheworkofBruno
Latour,whousesthetermuassociology”toquestiontheobviousness
ofso-calledsocialfactsandpostulatestrackingconnectionsorasso-
ciationsbetweensubjects,objectsanddevicesthat,actingtogether,
inalignment,produceuthesocial”.Tetermusocialization”meansthe
attempttoredefinetheverynotionofuthesocial”bygoingbackto
itsoriginalmeaningandenablingittoretraceconnections.Sociology
