1.Doctrinaldiscussions
Aspreviouslystated,thePolishnationalistmovement(NationalDemocracy)
oftheinterwarperiodplayedanimportantroleinthecountry’spolitical
life.Inthe1930s,thenationalistmovementattractedasignificantnumber
ofmembersofthepoliticalopposition.Consequently,themovementhad
anelectoratetobereckonedwithandarelativelybroadsphereofinfluence.
Thehistoryofthismovementisthoroughlydocumentedinavailablehisto-
riographicsourcesincludingnumerousmemoirsandbiographiespublished
outsidePolandaftertheSecondWorldWar.However,inacademicresearch,
whichfocusedprimarilyonthepoliticalprogrammesandparliamentary
activitiesoftheinterwarperiod,thereseemstobeanoticeablegapwhen
itcomestonationalisteconomicthinking,especiallyinthebroadercontext
ofthe1930seconomicdoctrines.
Itisalsoworthnotingthat,whilethepoliticalprogrammewasclearly
theworkofthemovement’sleader,RomanDmowski,thedevelopment
ofacomprehensiveeconomicprogrammebecameaspecialendeav-
ourofthenationalistelite.Theideologicalfoundationoftheeconomic
thinkingofthenationalistmovementwasfirstformulatedinthe1920s.
Itwastheworkoftwobrothers,StanisławandWładysławGrabski,who
later(Władysławinmid-1922andStanisławGrabskiin1926)focusedon
eitherpoliticaloracademicworkanddistancedthemselvesfrompartylife.
ThekeynationaldemocraticideologuethenbecameStanisławGłąbiński.
Anotherwell-knownPolisheconomist,EdwardTaylor,sharedtheideolo-
giesembracedbythenationaldemocraticmovement.Nonetheless,Taylor,
