movementsofthelast200years.IntheSnowdenerathisisnotonly
atopicforacademicdebates,buttheissueconcerningusall.“Gov-
ernmentsaroundtheworlddowhattheycanto‘unlearn’citizens
ofvaluingtheirprivacy.Acatalogueofrepeatedplatitudescon-
vincedpeoplethattheyshouldtoleratemajorviolationsoftheir
privatesphere;thesejustificationshaveprovedtobesoeffective
thattheauthoritybodiescollecthugeamountsofdataaboutwhat
peoplesay,whattheyreadandwhattheydoandwithwhom-and
peopleacceptandevenapplaudit”.
3Defendersofrepressiveprac-
ticesofthestateapparatuspromoteclichésthat“honest,innocent
peoplewhoactinlinethelawhavenothingtohideandnoreason
forconcern”.Inpractice,however,thecreatorsoftheserepressive
practiceskeep-asmuchaspossible-allinformationwhichcould
showtheiractivityinabroaderlight.Whengovernmentsspeakof
“thenationalsecurity”theyusuallywanttohidesomeoftheir
actionsagainstthesocietywhicharemorallyquestionable.When
wehearaboutthe“statesecret”whichmaynotbeknownbythe
public,mostoftenitreferstohidingsemi-legalandillegalactivities
conductedbythestateapparatus.
TheproblemisparticularlyacutewithinPolishsociety-anumber
ofpolicewire-taps,queriesontelephonebillingorloginsarethe
highestamongallthecountriesintheEuropeanUnion.However,
thesetypesofpracticesarebeyondanycivilsupervision.
Therefore,thebookmaybeofinterestnotonlytoadeptsof
sociology,politicalsciencesorcultureresearchers,butforallactive
citizensandcriticalobserversofthepublicsphere.
