Thereliabilityofpowerequipmentdirectlydependsonthequalityandcondition
oftheinsulationsystemsinoperation;i.e.,theirenduranceandlifetimes.Inthesetof
operationalexposures,theactionofastrongelectricfieldanditseffectonthedielec-
tricstructuresinhigh-voltageinsulationsystemsisofparticularimportance.Theoper-
atingtimeofelectricaldevicesislimitedbydegradationprocessesintheinsulation
materials,causingchangesintheirstructures,permanentdamage,and(asaresult)the
failureofthesedevices.Partialdischargesarethephenomenathatcausethesepro-
cesses.Theireliminationininsulationsystemsisaprerequisiteforthetechnological
processes;theiridentificationinpowerequipmentoperationhelpsensurereliability.
