Introduction

Poland,likeothercountries,isaplacewhereindividuals,families,andlocalcom-

munitieshavetheirownsenseofmaterialwell-beingandpoverty,justiceand

exploitation,subjectivityandrestrictionsoffreechoice,developmentandstagnation,

orawayofreferringtotheworldandpeople.Moreover,thesocietyasawholehasits

ownspecificdevelopmentprocesses.Comparedtotheleadersoftheglobaleconomy,

wearerecordholders:weworkforaminimumwage,weliveinadegradednatural

environment,butatthesametimeweareleadersintermsofGDPgrowthrate,in-

novationGoutsiders”,weformanationalmonolith,scarredbyapoliticaldivisioninto

twoPolandswithhomogeneouscultureandnationalconservatism,remaininginop-

positiontothelogicofuniversalism.Wealsohavemanyothermoreorlessspecific

potentialitiesindicatedbyluminariesofvarioussciencesandintellectuals,aswellas

barriersresultingfromdisproportionate,enclave-like,diffusion-polarisationdevelop-

ment,excludingentiresocialgroupsfrommodernisationanditsbenefits,aswellas

fromwealthmultiplicationandparticipatinginit.Knowledgeofthissocial,regional

andnationalspecificity,itsconditionsandconsequencesforabetterfutureremains

extremelyimportant.

Theexistingcircumstancesareimportantdeterminantsoftherangeofpossible

choicesandofeffectivenessofactions.Amongthem,pathdependence,i.e.attach-

menttotherulesofthoughtandactioninheritedbysubsequentgenerations,isone

ofthefundamentaldeterminantsofthefuture.Therefore,theserootsoffailureand

successmustbescrutinised.Inthissense,historicalknowledgebecomesateacherof

life,providedthatinamazeoffactsandcoincidences,wecandiscovertheprinciples

ofactionofpeoplewhoperformvariousrolesinthestructureofeconomic,social

andpoliticalsystems,andtheresultingconsequencesforthecourseofrealprocesses

fromthelinksbetweenthesefactsandcoincidences.Forthispurpose,areduction-

istapproach,methodologicalindividualismandmechanisticmodelsofresearching

developmenttrendsarenotenough.Suchperceptionomitsmanyimportantfactors

determiningthequalityoflife,promotestheobjectificationofpeople,dehumanisa-

tionofbusiness,andleadstomistakingmeansforgoals.

Itisnecessarytorefertotheholisticapproachandrespectthelinkbetweeneco-

nomicsandotherareasofhumanexistenceandaction.Thisiswherehistorycan
