whoseoriginallocationhistorianstrytodiscoveronthebasisoftheinfor-
mationinthetextorthetypeofmonumentonwhichtheinscriptionwas
placed.Wecan,naturally,assumethatthemajorityofthesemonuments
wereplacedincollegialmeetingplaces,corporategraveyardsortemples.
However,alackofcertaintyinthisregardremainsaseriousshortcoming
ofstudiesonRomancorporations.Weknowconsiderablymoreaboutthe
socialaspectofthecreationandfunctionsofepigraphictexts.Weshould
keepinmindthatthevastmajorityofinscriptionswaspublic(inthepre-
sent-daymeaningoftheword).Inthecaseofcorporateinscriptions,the
Cpublic)towhichthemessageofaninscriptionwasaddressedwasmainly
comprisedofthecollegiati,butinsomecircumstancesthegroupofread-
erscouldhavebeenmuchlarger(honorificinscriptions,tombs,etc.).Itis
