Bransby,headoftheschool,whomPoesoquaintlyportrayed
in“WilliamWilson.”ReturningtoRichmondin1820Edgarwassent
totheschoolofProfessorJosephH.Clarke.Heprovedanaptpupil.
YearsafterwardProfessorClarkethuswrote:
“Whiletheotherboyswrotemeremechanicalverses,Poewrote
genuinepoetry;theboywasabornpoet.Asascholarhewas
ambitioustoexcel.Hewasremarkableforself-respect,without
haughtiness.Hehadasensitiveandtenderheartandwoulddoanything
forafriend.Hisnaturewasentirelyfreefromselfishness.”
AttheageofseventeenPoeenteredtheUniversityofVirginia
atCharlottesville.Heleftthatinstitutionafteronesession.Official
recordsprovethathewasnotexpelled.Onthecontrary,hegained
acreditablerecordasastudent,althoughitisadmittedthat
hecontracteddebtsandhad“anungovernablepassionforcard-
playing.”ThesedebtsmayhaveledtohisquarrelwithMr.Allan
whicheventuallycompelledhimtomakehisownwayintheworld.
