name)wasbornatthebeginningofthefourteenthcenturyinthevil-
lageofKilvington,Yorkshirein1302/03.Hewasthesonofapriestof
thedioceseofYork.Duringhisstudyatarts,hecouldhavebeenfrst
inBaliol,wherehemostlikelymetBradwardine.8InOxfordhebecame
MasterofArts(1325/26)thenaDoctorofTheology(ca.1335).Most
likely,KilvingtonwasafellowofOrielCollege,Oxford.9RichardKilv-
ington’sactivitiesafterOxfordarebetterknownthanhisacademicca-
reer.Havingfnishedhisstudies,hejoinedthehouseholdofRichardof
Bury,whosepatronagehelpedsomebachelorsanddoctorsintheirec-
clesiasticalcareersandroyalservice.Between1334-1345Bury’shouse-
