PREFACE
Thismonographincludesanumberofpapersinthefieldsofliterature,cultu-
ralstudiesandlinguistics,makingacreativeatempttomergeselectedaspectsof
theheritageoftheEastandtheWest.Thevolumewhichwehandovertoreaders
bringstogetherworksofresearchersfromnumerousacademiccentresinPoland
andabroad.Owingtothethematicscopeoftheresearch,thepublicationhas
beendividedintotwoparts:
I.Languageandliteratureintheparadigmofcontemporaryculture.
II.DiscourseofRussianliteratureincontemporaryculture.
Thefirstpartofthemonographcoversthreemainthematicblocks:English
linguisticsintheageofglobalization;traditionandmodernityinliterature,and
theculturalandliteraryheritageofAbayKunanbayev.
ThechapterbyDorotaWerbińska,whichopensthispartofthevolume,pres-
entsefectivemethodsofteachingforeignlanguagesinthecontemporaryglo-
balizedworld.TheAuthordescribesseveralclassroomactivities,whichcanbe
successfullyusedbyforeignlanguageteachers:theconceptualmap,theflipped
classroom,andtheduoethnographicdialogue.
MarekŁukasikandPiotrSulikinvestigateimportantissuesassociatedwith
theuseofpopularonlinedictionariesinspecializedtranslations.Theproblems
ofmoderntranslationstudiesarealsoaddressedbyAnnaDybiec,whomakes
acomparativeanalysisofCharlesDickens’sChristmasstoryHTheCricketonthe
Hearth”anditstwoPolishtranslations.Sheexaminesthediferencesinthepre-
sentationofmale-femalerelationshipsinthesourcetextandinitsPolishren-
ditionsbytwotranslators:MariaFeldmanowa-KreczowskaandKrystynaTar-
nowska.
Inhisnoteworthycontribution,DanielKalinowskipresentstheaccountsof
twoKashubians:GertrudaJutrzenka-TrzebianowskaandAdolfKiedrowski,de-
portedbytheRedArmydeepintotheUSSR.TheAuthordescribestheviolenceof
theSovietarmyagainsttheKashubiancivilianpopulation:theft,robbery,rapes,
arrestsanddeportationstolabourcamps.
