2.Thelasthoursofpeace
TeGreatWarstartedon28thJuly1914,fromwhatlookedlike
alocal,peripheralquarrelbetweenSerbiaandAustria-Hungary,be-
tweentheKarađorđevićdynastyandtheHabsburgs,soon-within
therstfewdaysofAugust-toturnintoawarbetweentheDualAl-
lianceandtheTripleEntente,andthence,withinthenextfewweeks
of1914,tobloatupintoaworldwar.Teoutbreakofwarwaspre-
cededbyaspateofmobilisation,fullorpartial,carriedoutbythebel-
ligerents.Mobilisationwasatransitionphasebetweenpeaceandwar.
Temensubjecttomobilisation,drafeesorcalledupfromleave,as
wellasvolunteers,haddrafcardsdeliveredtotheirhomes,summon-
ingthemtoreporttospecifiedunits.Teypacked,saidtheirprayers
andgood-byestotheirfamiliesandwenttotheirmilitarydraf
centres.Withinafewdaysarmybarrackslledupwiththousands
ofyoungmen.Butwhilesomewereinahurrytobeconscripted,
otherswererushingtothealtar.Churchesofalldenominationswere
crammedwithnewlywedsandtheirfamilies.OnlyontheSaturday
andSunday,31stJulyand1stAugustinBerlinalonethereweretwo
thousandweekendweddings.Itwasthesameinothercountriesand
citiesofEuropesettingtowar,asconscriptsandvolunteersalike
hastenedtotietheknot.
Onceinbarracks,theyoungmenweregivenmedicaltestsand
hadtheirhaircut.Nextuniforms,equipment,andweaponswereis-
suedtothem.Havingreceivedtheiruniformsandarms,theywere
allocatedtoacompany,companieswereallocatedtoabattalion,bat-
talionstoregiments,andregimentstodivisions.Infantrydivisions
hadancillaryunits-supplyunits,sanitaryunits,kitchens,cavalry
units,cyclistunits,andpostalservices-attachedtothem.Divisions
