theUnitedStates,aferthemostexpensiveandoneofthelongestpresidential

campaigns.BydefeatingMittRomney,ObamabecametheﬁrstDemocrat

sinceFranklinDelanoRoosevelttogainthemajorityofpopularvotesand

onlysecondtowintwopresidentialelectionsafertheWorldWarII.

10daysbeforethishistoricalevent,afewdozensofEuropeanandAmeri-

canscholarsmetattheJagiellonianUniversityinKrakówtodiscusstheissues

relatedtothe2012presidentialelection.Clearly,wehadnoideawhatthe

ﬁnaloutcomeoftheelectionwouldbe,butallwereabletoprovidesomein-

sightsontheﬁrsttermofObamapresidency,the2012electionsitself,putting

thiscampaignincontextofpresidentialelectionthroughtheentireAmerican

history,aswellasforecastwhichpaththeUnitedStateswouldtakeandwhich

issueswouldbethemostpressingforthenextpresident.

Wearepleasedtopresenttheworkofthoseofthecolleagueswhochoseto

sharetheirworkintheprintedversion.Wedividedthereceivedpapersinto

fourparts,dependingonthesubjectsofthepresentedscholarship.Tevol-

umeopenswithpapersonissuesrelatedtohistoricalandlegalaspectsofthe
