ThecloudofashfellonFennoscandia,whichwascoveredwithlushvegetation
intheEarlyPalaeogene,coatedtheleavesandwholebranchesoftreesandcer-
tainlyinitiatedasecretionofresinlthetrees,protectivesubstance.Onecanfind
ananalogytotheextentofthisphenomenononmapswhichshowtherangeof
volcanicashthrownupbytheIcelandicvolcanoEyjafjallajökullinApril2010.
Inliterature,therearerepeatedreportsonthepresenceofvolcanicashin
thevicinityofamber-bearingdeposits;Russiangeologistssaythatthisisalsothe
caseinSambia.TherearereportsofvolcanicashfindsinUkraine,notfaraway
fromthedocumentedamberdepositsnearKlesiv.Cretaceousresinsarealsoac-
companiedbysedimentsrelatedtovolcanicactivity.Theburmitelocalitieshave
tracesofvolcanicactivityaswell.ThelatestreportsfromDanyAzarindicatethe
presenceofUpperJurassicfossilresinsinLebanon,svolcanicsediments.The
romaniteofnorthernTurkeyldesignatedrecentlybytheauthorofthisbooklis
foundingreywackesandstone(seep.132)inwhichvolcanicrockdebrisisvis-
ible.IntheDominicanRepublic,sBayaguanaRegion,fossilresinsfromSierra
deAquaandCotuicopalwereformedinareassurroundedinthenortheastand
southwestbyvolcanoes.Moreandmoresubfossilresinscurrentlybeingdiscov-
eredontheislandsofIndonesiaandMalaysiabearwitnesstorepeatederuptions
inthisvolcanicallyrestlessarea.Whatweknowisthatca.75,000yearsagothere
wasaneruptionoftheTobavolcanoinSumatra,whilethewhitelayerofvolcanic
dustonFloresIslandformed12,000yearsago.
