intheprimaryschoolwhenIpreparedthemapofjourneytakenbyprotagonists
fromSienkiewicz’sTrylogy,andIwassurprisedtofindthatevensmalllocations
mentionedbytheauthorsimplyexistedonthemap.Later,Ireturnedtosuchareas
whenreadingSchulz,Kuśniewicz,Wittlin,Stryjkowski,Stojowski,Odojewski,
Vincenz,Buczkowski,orHaupt.TheimageofGaliciawasthusmademore
complete,buttookanobsolete,pre-warshape.Contemporarytimescouldbe
reconstructedatmost,inthegrotesquemanner,asdonebyKuśniewiczinStrefy,
whilemakingtheghostofanoldgraph,wearingold-fashionedgaiters,haunt
newownersofaformeraristocraticPolishresidence,orafemaleparticipantof
astudenttrip9.
ThevisionofGaliciaintheeyesofpost-warPolesfromitsformerwestern
halfwasthusdurablybroken:inthewest,whatwasGalicianwasatthesametime
familiar,traditional,accustomed;whenlookingtotheeast,however,the“Galician”
referredtoacolourful,butratheralienworldreflectedinbooks,butblurredin
memories.Towhatextentsuch“easternlands”wherethelandofliteraturecan
beseeninthevastworkbyMarekTomaszewski:ÉcrirelanatureauXXesiècle:
lesromancierspolonaisdesconfins10.TheauthormakesamapofeasternGalicia,
wherehemarks“hometowns”ofPolishwriters,thusallocatingseventeennames
offamousauthors-andthelistisfarfromcomplete!Thishabitofrecording
theimageofeasternlandsoftheCommonwealthinliteraturestartedratherearly
amongtheemigrantwriters,tomentionjustquicklydiscontinuedseriesKrajlat
dziecinnychwithabeautifulessaybyWittlinaboutLviv11.
Itisonlynowadays,whengoodneighbourhoodbetweenPolandandUkraine
hascausedintensifiedtouristtraffic,theholisticimageoftheformerlandand
bondsbetweenresidentsofbothpartsofGaliciacanbereconstructed-yeton
completelydifferent,notalwayshealthyterms.Thisistestifiedtobybooks
suchasZiemowitSzczerek’sPrzyjdzieMordorinaszje,czyliTajnahistoria
Słowian12.Theprotagonistsofhispurposefullyliterature-stylisedreportscannot
perceiveanythinginUkraineinanunbiasedmanner,astheyarevictimsoflong-
