areweekswheredecadeshappen.”1Andtheyear2020wasso.
Originally,marketingwasalocal,unmeasurableandintuitivetool.Nordidthelong-forgotten
fishtraderfromtheEuphratesknowexactlywhichofheractivities,eithertowhatextentthey
translatedintotheincreaseinsales.Allsheknewwasthattheywereeffective.Shedidnotneed
tobuildacomplicatedstrategyofconqueringnewmarkets.Herbuyersoperatedlocally,and
referencesandinstructionswerecommunicatedthroughwordofmouth.
Vivelarevolution
Ascivilizationdeveloped,theworldbegantoshrink.Alongwiththeinventionoftheprinting
pressthemassesgainedaccesstoknowledge.Thefirstnewspapersbecamethecarrierof
advertisementsthatgaveentrepreneurscompletelynewperspectives.Railroadandmo-
torizationallowedformoreintensiveinteractionsbetweencountriesandmadeiteasierto
conquernewmarkets.Thetelephoneandtelevisionhaveplacedawindowtotheworldin
theaudience’shouses.
Everygreatinvention,sincetheindustrialage,throughtheageofelectricity,totheageof
information,hasreshapedthelandscapeoftheworld.Despitetheunjustifiedfearandhuge
objectionsthataccompaniedtheintroductionofeachnovelty,soonerorlaterthesegoods
foundtheirwayintoawidercirculation.
Today,mobilephones,whichinthe1990swerealuxuryproductforbusinessmenand
celebrities,havebecomewidelyavailable.In2021halftheworld’spopulation3.9billion
peoplewasusingsmartphones.2Thereareevenareaswheretheirpopularityfarexceeds
thatoflaptopsanddesktopcomputers.
