culturesandethnicgroups.Theairoftoleranceandwealthbuiltontradehas
enabledculture,science,andtheartstoflourishinthecityforcenturies.Today,
GdańskremainsakeymeetingplaceandmajortouristattractioninPoland.
Whilethecityboastshistoricsitesofenchantingbeauty,italsohasamajor
historicandsocialimportance.Inadditiontoits1000-yearhistory,thecityistheplacewherethe
SecondWorldWarbrokeoutaswellasthebirthplaceofSolidarność,theSolidaritymovement,
whichledtothefallofCommunisminCentralandEasternEurope.

TheEuropeanSolidarityCentreisamultifunctionalinstitutioncombining
scientifc,culturalandeducationalactivitieswithamodernmuseumand
archive,whichdocumentsfreedommovementsinthemodernhistory
ofPolandandEurope.
TheCentrewasestablishedinGdańskonNovember8th2007.Itsnewbuildingwasopenedin
2014ontheanniversaryoftheAugustAccordssignedinGdańskbetweentheworkers’union
“Solidarność”andcommunistauthoritiesin1980.TheCentreismeanttobeanagora,aspace
forpeopleandideasthatbuildanddevelopacivicsociety,ameetingplaceforpeoplewhohold
theworld’sfuturedear.ThemissionoftheCentreistocommemorate,maintainandpopularise
theheritageandmessageoftheSolidaritymovementandtheanti-communistdemocraticop-
positioninPolandandthroughouttheworld.ThroughitsactivitiestheCentrewantstoinspire
newcultural,civic,tradeunion,localgovernment,nationalandEuropeaninitiativeswithauni-
versaldimension.

TheCollegeofEasternEuropeisanon-proft,non-governmentalfounda-
tionfoundedonFebruary9th2001byJanNowak-Jeziorański,aformer
headofthePolishsectionofRadioFreeEuropeandademocraticactivist.
ThefoundationdealswithcooperationbetweenthenationsofCentral
andEasternEurope.Theaimsifitschartersaretocarryouteducational,culturalandpublish-
ingactivities,andtodevelopprogrammeswhichenhancethetransformationinthecountries
ofEasternEurope.TheorganisationhasitsheadquartersinWrocław,Poland,acityinwestern
Poland,perfectlysituatedinthecentreofEuropeandwithadeepunderstandingofbothWest-
ernandEasternEurope.
