Wehaverecentlywitnessedanumberofspectacularelectoralvictoriesofil-
liberalparties,especiallyinCentralEurope.ViktorOrbáninHungary,RobertFico
inSlovakia,JarosławKaczyńskiinPolandandMilošZemanintheCzechRepublic
areallscepticalofliberaldemocracyanditsrules.Similartendenciesareseenin
otherpartsofEurope.Forexample,theUnitedKingdomIndependenceParty,the
FreedomPartyofAustria,France’sFrontNationalandtheAlternativeforGermany
(AlternativefürDeutschlandAfD)areallexamplesofilliberalmovementsthat
havegainedpopularityintheWest.Clearly,therecentvictoryofDonaldTrump
intheUnitedStatesandtheearlyexecutiveordersofhisadministrationprovide
furtherevidencethatweindeedhaveaproblemwithdemocracyworldwide.

AnanalysisoftheriseofpopulisminthecountriesoftheformerEasternbloc
shouldincludethecontextinwhichliberaldemocracyandfreemarketeconomy
wereintroducedintotheregion.Teconsequencesofthedemocraticrevolutions
inCentralEuropeduringthe1989-1990FallofNationswerenotonlythecol-
lapseofauthoritarianregimesbutalsotheirsocialwelfare.Poles,Czechs,Slovaks,
