INTRODUCTION
DavidHume,oneofthemostfamouscriticsofthepossibility
ofmiraculousevents,expressedtheconvictionthattheaccountsof
miraclesandprodigieswillbefoundinallhistory,sacredandprofane
(D.Hume,AnEnquiryConcerningHumanUnderstanding,SectionX:
OfMiracles).TheaccuracyofthepredictionmadebytheScottishra-
tionalisthasbeenconfirmedinthesubsequentcenturies(includingthe
presentone).Thisconfirmationwasmadethroughbothsuchaccounts
constantlyappearingandthediscussions,whichconcerned,andstill
concern,thepossibilityoftheoccurrenceoftheevents,describedas
miraculous,andthenatureoftheseevents.Moreover,thequotedstate-
mentseemstorevealtheelementofhumannature,whichgenerates
thehumanneedoftakingnewintellectualchallengesinthefaceof
suchevents,or,atleastthetheoreticalpossibilityoftheiroccurrence.
Withoutjudgingatthispoint,howtoclassifytheeventsdescribedas
miraculous,weshouldsaythatthemiracleisaparticularlyinteresting
objectofinterestforhumanmind.Thisisbecauseofthemysteryac-
companyingthemiracle;becauseofthecomplexityoftheproblems
consideredwithrespecttothemiracle;andbecauseoftheviewsre-
vealedwhendiscussingthemiracle.
Butstill,istheproblemofmiracleimportantandinterestingfrom
philosophicalpointofview?Theviewsinthisrespectvaryconsider-
ably,yetitseemsthatthenotionofamiracleanditscontentshould
beinterestingforsomeonewhoattemptstoknowthenatureofthe
realityaroundhim,therealityheistheelementof;andwhoattempts
tounderstandtheprocessofdiscoveringtheworldandtheexisten-
tialexperienceofahumanbeing.Itappearsthatamiracleandthe
considerationsofitexemplifythecontentoftheseveryfundamental
questionsstimulatingeveryonewhotriestogainatleastabitbetter
understandingandatleastabitmorewisdom.Ifamiracleitselfisthe
