Banking is one of the fastest growing sectors of modern finance. Although the negative impacts of the global financial crisis are still noticeable in many countries, banks in Poland are actively developing their businesses by offering customers a growing number of new financial products and services. This development is obviously conditioned by both supervisory regulations and macroeconomic factors. There is no doubt, however, that it is the banking sector that will be a determinant of the development of the financial system in Poland.
This publication presents articles that deal with selected problems of modern banking. However, even its wide range of topics does not cover all the issues that affect the current and future situation of the banking sector. It seems, however, that the issues raised in the publication combine two common problems: the bank’s relationship with all its stakeholders and the banking risk management. They are nowadays important and extremely difficult subjects of research and analysis for both researchers and practitioners.
The book contains the papers presented at the international scientific conference “Current issues in banking sector in Poland and Eastern Europe”, held in Wroclaw, at Castle Topacz, on July 2, 2013. In addition to the authors of the published articles, conference participants were also academics from Ukrainian Banking University, Vilnius University and the State University of Economics and Finance in St. Petersburg. Conference debates focused on the problems of banking in Poland and Eastern European countries, but EU issues were also emphasized. It is worth noting that the international nature of the conference devoted exclusively to banking is still a unique phenomenon in Poland.
The future of the European banking system is now dependent on two factors: the Community regulations and substantial separation of banking systems in the countries of uniting Europe. A prime example of the problems faced by the European Union countries is now the concept of a banking union. Undoubtedly, every forum for the exchange of views and opinions of experts in banking can contribute to finding solutions to these problems – solutions that bank customers should benefit from.
