Andfinally,interculturalcommunicationissusceptibletojudgement
andevaluation.Participantsdonotenterinterculturaldialogueempty-
handed,theybringvarious,oftendivergedexpectationsandprejudices
(BystrovandYermolenko2011:16).AccordingtoThorp(1991:108–109),
culturallyspecificnormsandpatternsofinteractionafectcommuni-
cationandlearning,whereasinteractionaldifcultiesleadtonegative
assessments.Judgementseemsinevitableininteraction,especiallywhen
itsparticipantsoperateonculturallydiferentstandards.Itmanifests
itselfontwolevels:theaction-selectionlevelandtheaction-reaction
level.Thorp(1991:108)alsodiscusses“confusedencounters,”thatis,
situationswhicharecharacterisedbyamismatchofexpectationsand
unpredictability.Individual’sjudgementandappraisalofintercultural
encountersmayinfluencehis/heractionsandmotivationtoengagein
futureencounters.
Someresearchers(Thorp1991:109;House2003;Houseetal.2003;
Krieberneggetal.2014)examinedinteractionalproblemsintheclass-
roomcontext.Theyfoundthatthemainreasonforinteractionaldif-
ficultiesislackofknowledgeanddiferent,culturallylearnedexpecta-
tionsforappropriatesocialbehaviour.Theyaddthatthesetacitsocial
rulesandroutinesareculturespecific,andtheycanimpedetheinter-
action.Philips(1983,inBanksandMcGeeBanks2010)referstothese
routinesandrulesas“invisibleculture”(1983,inBanksandMcGee
Banks).AlthoughtheresearchconductedbyPhilipsdealswiththeedu-
cationalcontext,someresultsmaybealsoapplicabletoamoregeneral
context.Glaseretal.(2007:34)discussculturallydependentdifer-
encesincommunicationstyles,anawarenessofwhichseemsessential
ininterculturalexchanges.Certainnationalcommunicationpatterns
regulateconversationalmoves,forexample,turn-taking,directnessvs.
indirectness,orlanguagebehaviour,forinstance,spokenvs.written
preferences.Likewise,communicationstyles,whicharesituation-based,
determinethefollowingaspectsofcommunication:interrupting(when
andhowtodoit),communicatingamongteammembers,decisionmak-
inginaformalorinformalway,directvs.moreindirectwaysofspeak-
ing,etc.(Glaseretal.2007:34).
Becauselinguisticdiversityandculturaldissonancebecomenoticea-
bleduringinterculturalinteraction,flexibilityandcreativityonthepart
ofitsparticipantsarecalledfor.AccordingtoGlaseretal.(2007:29),
interculturalencountersserveasopportunitiestolearn,unlearn,and
relearnnewbutalsooldknowledgeand,therefore,tochallengeone’s
paradigmsandre-readtheworld.Consequently,thesuccessofinter-
culturalinteractionisalsodependentontheindividual’swillingnessto
exertthisflexibilityandcreativityaswellashis/herreadinesstocope
