Duringtheseveraldecadesofmyresearchanduniversityteachingonsports
historyandculture,Ihaveobservedthatmanyofmylecturesandalsosmaller
worksdeliveredatdiferentinstitutionsandorganizations,thenpublishedsepa-
ratelyininternationaljournalsanddiferentcollectivebooks,couldconstitute
aquitecoherentmonographofselectedissuesconcerningcontemporarysport.
Surprisinglyformyself,Ifoundlecturesandpapersinsufcientnumbertopub-
lishatleasttwobooksonculturalandhistoricalaspectsofsport.ButIdecided
toselectthebestofthemandpreparethemforjustonepublication.Andhere
itis,lecturesdeliveredindiferentconfigurationsatdiferentacademicinsti-
tutionsandconferences,suchastheInternationalOlympicAcademy,whereI
deliveredawholeseriesoflecturesinpost-graduateseminarsforPh.D.writers
fromallovertheworld(2001,2013and2014,fivetosixlecturesforeachses-
sion),then4lecturesfortheAnnualSessionforYoungParticipantsbetween
1992and2008;threelecturesfortheBritishSocietyofSportsHistory(2008,2011
and2012),onefortheCESHannualCongressin2008,aseriesof6lecturesfor
Ph.D.seminarsofthePhysicalEducationAcademyinWrocław,etc.Anumber
oftheselectureswererepeatedmorethanonceondiferentoccasionsandat
diferentinstitutionsbeforetheygainedtheircurrentform,whiletakinginto
considerationtherequirementsofdiferentaudiences.Tus,particulartextsin-
cludedinthisbookhavebeengraduallyimprovedandperfected,andfinally,
accordingtooldacademictradition,allofthemwerepublishedindiferentin-
ternationaljournals,conferenceproceedingsorothercollectiveworks.Telist
ofjournalsandcollectivebooksinwhichthesepapersandlectureswereinitially
publishedcanbefoundbelowintheacknowledgmentsection.
Ihavealwaystriedtoremainconsistent,andIhavenotavoidedmyolderpa-
persandlectures,keepingaquiteconstantlineofreasoninginmyviews.Some
ofmyearlierworksprintedinthisbookhave,ofcourse,beenupdated,some
shortenedandothersmuchextended,butthiswasalldoneinordertoimprove
them.InafewcasesIrestoredsomeshorttextfragmentswhichforprinting
