aprescribedandimportantactivityforscholars,whichcomeswithrules,butnotnearly
asimportantaspublishing.However,researchersreadmanyarticlesandonlyciteafewof
them,soselectionisrequiredandtrustworthinessassessedaspartoftheprocess.
3.3.1Characteristicpractices
Anumberofcitationpracticeswerepresentedfortheconsiderationofrespondentsandthey
wereaskedtoconsiderhowcharacteristicoftheirfieldeachwasandrateitonafive-point
scale(5mostcharacteristicand1leastcharacteristic).Notethequestionwasnotasked
directlyoftheindividualbecauseitwasfeltthatresearchersmightnotanswerhonestly
(somecouldbeconstitutedastgaming’),butabouttheprevalenceofthepracticeintheir
owndiscipline.Figure3,aspiderdiagram,providesagraphiccomparisonoftheviewsof
lifescientistsandhumanitiesscholarsinrespecttocitingpractices.Forthisfigureefect
sizehasbeencomputed(smallinnerline).Forefectsizevalues<0.1thismeansnoefect,
valuesbetween0.2and0.4meanssmallefect,valuesbetween0.5and0.7meansaninter-
mediateefectandvaluesequalto0.8orgreatermeanslargeefect.Tusthediferencesin
samplesizehavenoimpactonthisanalysis.Telinesinthefigurerepresentmeanratings.
Soyoucanseeforexamplethatcitingtheseminalworkonatopicisthemostcommon
practiceforbothdisciplines,evenmoresoforhumanistsandsotooiscitingnon-peer
reviewedsources,suchasblogs.Humanistsappearlessinterestedintgaming’byciting
reviewersandself-citation.
