Thedevelopmentdiscourseineconomics,sincetheverybeginninginthe1940s
andthe1950s,hasproducedanumberoftheories,thoughtsandconceptson
acountry’seconomicdevelopmentandontheprocessofeconomicgrowth.Whatis
thetheoryofeconomicdevelopment?AccordingtoLordRobbins,“itaddresses
itselftotwotypesofquestions.[...]wecansayitaskswhydevelopmenttakesplace
andhowithappens”(Robbins1968:1).Thecomplexityoftheeconomicdevelopment
phenomenonandalargenumberofvariablesthatmustbeconsideredresultedin
profusionofapproaches,theoriesandideas.Theoriesinfluentialenoughtoinspire
actualpolicesofglobalplayersweretestedonthegroundandthenaltered,abandoned
orrejectediftheyfailedtoworkintherealworld.Theevolutionofdevelopment
theoriesisstrictlyinterconnectedwiththencontemporaryworldeventsand
experiencesinthefield,andtheseinteractionsarepresentuptonow.
Thereisahugebodyofcontemporaryliteratureonthetheoreticalbackground
ofeconomicdevelopmentprocess.Tworecentlypublishedextensivecompendia,
werededicatedexclusivelytotheissueofdevelopmenttheory:RichardPeetand
ElaniHartwick(2009)TheoriesofDevelopment,andJohnRapley(2007)
UnderstandingDevelopment:TheoryandPracticeintheThirdWorld.1Moreover,
themajorityoftextbooksondevelopmenteconomicsaswellasmonographic
publicationsonforeignaid,containoneortwochaptersreviewingtheoriesand
schoolsofthoughtondevelopment(e.g.TodaroandSmith2012:chapters3-4,Desai
