PREFACE
Tesphereofhealthcareconstitutesascientificandsocialarea,inwhichawider
rangeoffunctionalityofbothscientific,publicandhospitallibraries(specialistones
setupinhealthcarecenters)isbeingrealized.Teorganizationalmethodsusedin
themmakeupwhatisreferredtoasmedicallibrarianship-asphereofactivitywhich
istheresultofpractice.Tesetofprofessionalskillsandsourcesofinformationwere
beingformedsincetheendofthe19thc.throughallthedecadesofthe20thc.con-
tributingtotheshapingofinternationalmedicallibrarianshipinthe21stc.Terange
ofobligationsandresponsibilitiesofthelibrariansisnotlimitedexclusivelytocon-
tributingtotheincreaseofreadershipofbooksdevotedtomedicaltopics.Aneed
fornewqualificationsintheoccupationoflibrarian,ofinformationcounselingand
evidence-basedresearchmethodologyhaveariseninthesphereofhealthcareand
promotion.
Ihavedecidedtorevealtheroleoflibrariesasinstitutionsspecializinginso-
cialcommunicationandplaceswheremembersofsocietycommunicatewithother
membersofsocietyfortheorganizationofaccessandreceptionofinformationre-
latingtohealthcareandpromotion.InthecourseofrealizationofthistaskIhave
takenintoconsiderationthemostimportantfactsanddocumentstestifyingtothe
formationofthispracticalandresearchsphere;Ihavedonesobydividingthebook
intotwomajorspheresofinterest.
Inthefirstone,entitledTeUsersofInformationRelatingtoHealthCareand
HealthPromotion,theproblemsofthreesuccessivechapterscompriseknowledge
relatingtousersandthedependencieswhichoccurinthecontemporarymedical
librarianshipintheworld.Teaboveissuesrelatetofactorssuchas:categoriesof
users,methodsoflibraryorganization,causesoffailingtousetheinformation,cri-
teriaevaluatingthequalityofinternetservicesandlibrary-informationsystems.
Aseparateproblemwhichisaconsequenceofthesetypeofrelations,isinformative
andhealtheducationwhichconstitutesthesubject-matterofthesecondchapter.
Inthethirdchapter,IpresentaprofileoftheuserofhealthinformationinPol-
ishpubliclibrariesinfivecities,onthebasisofmyownquestionnairesurvey;the
surveywasconductedinBytomandKatowice(Silesianprovince),Krakówand
Chrzanów(Małopolskaprovince)andintheWarsawneighborhoodofWarszawa-
Ochotainthecourseoftwosuccessivemonths:NovemberandDecemberof2006.
Tesocial-demographiccharacteristicoftheusersofselectedpubliclibrarieswas
supplementedwiththedescriptionofthecities,takingintoaccountfactorssuch
as:theirpopulation,historicalconditionings,urbandevelopment,accesstocultural
andeducationalinstitutionsaswellastheinternet.
