Luckaisknownforhisfondnessfororder;justasinhis
everyday
work
he
does
not
need
to
surround
himself
with
unnecessary,distractingscrapsofpaper,hedoesnotallow
himselftoclutterhismind.Despitethemanyyearsthathave
passed,heisstillconsideredtopossessoneofthesharpest
mindsintheVatican.Icanseehimsittingathisdesk,
upright,withhiseyesnarrowed,carefullywordingthereply
toadifficultquestionwithaserious,gravelookonhis
face.
Heisamanofshadow.EverytimeIwasinhisoffice,
andtherehavealreadybeendozensofsuchvisits,itwas
alwaysdimandheavycurtainscoveredthewindows.ThatIalso
findquitesignificant.
Few
people
realise
how
important
a
figure
archbishop
LuckaisduetohisfunctionasHeadofDivisionTwoofthe
VaticanStateSecretary.Heisthedefactocounterpartofthe
state’sMinisteroftheInterior.Notmuchhappensbehindthe
wallsoftheVaticanwithouthimknowing;allstringscome
togetherinoneplace,behindthatdarkmahoganydoor.Inthe
dimnessofhisoffice,archbishopLuckatakesdecisionswhich
areoftenofkeyimportancetothefunctioningofthechurch-
state.
However,
he
never
manifests
what
power
he
has
and
alwayskeepshisdistance.Justasherarelyletssunshine
lightenhisoffice,hepreferstoavoidbeinginthespotlight
and,
whenever
possible,
it
is
his
personal
secretary
who
handlesallcontactwithmediarepresentatives.Icanonly
guesswhetheritiscausedbycautionorjusthisreluctance
towardspublicappearances.
