church-statewasarigidcreationwhichcouldnotkeepupwith
the
pace

modern

Respect
for
tradition
and
ceremony,thoughimportant,doesnotprecludemakinguseof
thelatesttechnologicalachievements.TheVaticanneverwas
againstscienceandprogress,contrarytomanyunfavourable
opinions,whichareusuallyexpressedbythosewhodon’thave
theslightestideaaboutit.
FromtheroomadjacenttoarchbishopLucka’sofficecome
thesoundsofcomputerkeyboardsandtelephoneconversation
chatter
is
audible
time
and
again.
That
is
the

face,
usually
unnoticed,
and
even
if
noticed,
disdained.
Itisthefaceofamethodicalprofessional,radiantdue
totheglowofthecomputerscreenratherthaneternallight.
RoomTwo,asit’susuallyreferredto,isfilledwithpeople.
Many
wear
clerical
archbishop
also
collars,
but
not
all
of
them;
the
contracts
many
lay
people.
They
live
in
variousdistrictsofRomeandwhentheyenterthewallsofthe
Vatican,theyswipetheiraccessmagneticcards.Thereare
womenamongthem.Whatismore,therearenon-believersamong
them
–
when
hiring
employees
to

Two,
the
Vatican
appliescompletelydifferentcriteriaaltogether.Itisthe
elite,thebestanalysts,graduatesoftopschools,oftenwith
experienceininternationalcorporations.Theyperformtheir
work
diligently
and
professionally
and
for
that
they
are
handsomelyrewarded.Theycollectandaggregateinformation
crucialfortheworkoftheheadsectionoftheSecretaryof
State.Theysometimesjokeamongthemselvesatcoffeebreaks
thattheyworkinthemostpowerfulenterpriseofall:God’s
Corporation.
