TheaimofthestudywastoexplainwhysomePinussylvestristreesaremoreresistanttostress

factorsthanothersandwhethertheobserveddiversityresultsfromnaturalselectionornot.Two

subpopulationsofScotspinewereanalyzed,bothofwhichgrewinanareawhichwasseverely

pollutedwithheavymetals.Parentaltreesandseedlingsweremonitoredforfourconsecutiveyears

inthebufferzoneofthezincplantinMiasteczkoŚląskie.Thecontentofheavymetalsinsoiland

plantmaterialmarkedlyexceededthresholdvalues,particularlyforZn,PbandCd.Themorpholog-

icaltraits,isoenzymaticandmicrosatellitelociaswellascytologicaldatawereanalyzed.Theob-

tainedresultsindicatethattherearecleargeneticdifferencesbetweentreeswhicharesensitiveand

thosewhichareresistanttocontaminationinanaturallyregeneratedpinestand.Thesedifferences

wererecordedbothinphenotypes(morphology,cytology,isoenzymes)andgenotypes(microsatel-

liteDNA).Adaptivegeneticdiversityobservedinthetwogenerationsreflectsdifferencesinthe

survivalcapabilitiesofindividualsexposedtostressandpointstotheselectivepressureagainst

treeswithspecificgenotypes.
