OnDecember8th1986at23:50,inthehospital
ofawatchfactoryinthetownofChistopol,Tatar
AutonomousSovietSocialistRepublic,Anatoly
Marchenko,aSovietprisonerofconscience,diedatthe
ageof48.Hewastransferredtothishospitalfromprison
afterhishealthdeteriorateddramaticallyasaresult
ofahungerstrikethathedeclaredinAugustofthesame
yearandcontinuedforseveralmonths.Hewroteinhis
letter,whichwaspublished12yearsafterhisdeath:
“SinceAugust4thIhavebeenonahungerstrike,
demandingastoptothetortureofpoliticalprisoners
intheSovietUnionandtheirrelease.”Hewasburied
unnamedundernumber646.
