fromTomskwhowassentencedtofiveyearsaftercalling
onpeopletoattendaprotestagainsthightransportfares
andforcriticisingtheRussianinterventioninUkraine.
Highprice
TheKremlinhasalsobeencarefulaboutwho
itchoosestoputbehindbars.UnlikeEgypt,whichjailed
thousandsofgovernmentopponents,orAzerbaijan,
wherepoliticalprisonershaveincludedthemost
prominenthumanrightslawyers,investigativejournalists
andpoliticalactivists,byandlarge,theKremlinseems
tohaveintentionallytargetedindividualsorsmallgroups
withalowprofile.Thesearepeoplewithoutnetworks
intheWestandwhoarenothouseholdnames,even
amongtheliberalopposition-supportingminority.The
better-knownleadersofcivilsocietyareinsteadhitwith
heftyfines,theirworkisobstructedandtheirreputation
attackedonstateTV.Meanwhile,Russiansacrossthe
countryaregettingthemessagethatlifeispossible,but
expressinganysortofoppositionrisksahighprice.
