Thedissertationshouldnotberegardedasanotherversionofhistoryofliteratureormonograph
onitssubject,butasanoutlineproblemofdevelopmentandfunctioningoftheSerbianliterature
intheseventeenthcentury,perceivedfromtheview-pointofhistory,politics,religion,andculture
ofthetime.Thepresentationofthemostimportantliteraryrealizationsandcharacteristiccultural
phenomena,byputtingtheminorderinaccordancewithsortingundertheircontents,istoestab-
lishabasicshapeofliterature,andtoilluminatetheseventeenthcentury,neglectedbythescholar
reflectionandrarelydistinguishedfromhistoricalperiodizationandtimeknownunderthename
ofTurkishbondage.Theconsiderations,containedinthework,werecausedbyasequenceof
factors,however,alackofthescientificinterestsregardingtheveryperiodofliterarydevelop-
mentturnedouttobetheessentialone.Duetothislack,thedissertationtendstojuxtaposewith
anincorrectlyrepeatedconceptionaccordingtowhichtheacademicdiscoursestillexaminesand
definesthisliteratureinthecategoriesofpre-orientationwhereintheBaroqueisidentifiedwith
theModernity.Furthermore,itarticulatesanotherimportantoppositionthatreferstoanotionof
theSerbiancultureofmemoryorcommunity/societyofmemorysincetheverynotionisoften
raisedwithoutaproperconsideration,especiallyoronlywithregardtotheeighteenthcenturyand
thecanonofpositivetradition,crystallizedatthetime.Thedissertationthereforeisontheone
handaclassicalpresentationinthefieldofliterarystudiesnamely,adescriptionofthegenres,
texts,significantidealisticconstructsandnarrativeschemes,conceivedasaparadigmofthe
Serbianliterarysystemintheseventeenthcentury.Ontheotherhand,itattemptstodefinethe
system’sfunctionsthroughanexpositionofitsmnemonicability,retrospectiveorientation,and
peculiarmechanismsofselection,reconstruction,andsupplementationconcerningthevisionof
thepast.
