asfewas30-50%oftheindividualssurviveanhydrobiosis.Asdemonstratedby
studiesonaculturedpopulationofPhilodinaroseola(RICCI1987),thepopula-
tionsthatsurvivedtheanabiosishadahigherreproductivepotentialthanthose
thathadnotgonethroughit.AccordingtoRICCI(1987),anhydrobiosis-similarly
toparthenogenesis-isanadaptivestrategyusefulinensuringsurvivalinavari-
ableandvaryinghabitat.Becausebdelloidhabitatsaremorevariablethanthose
ofmonogononts,persistenceofbdelloidrotifersdependsontheiranhydrobiotic
abilitymorethanontheirproductionofdormanteggs.
Interestingareresultsofexperimentalstudiesonanhydrobiosiseffectson
variousagegroupsof15speciesrepresenting6bdelloidgenera.Alltherotifers
weredesiccatedfor7days.Thosespecieslivinginmossesandonthebottomof
waterbodiesweremoresuccessfulinwithstandinganhydrobiosisthanplanktonic
rotiferswere(RICCI1998).
6.Ecology
Rotiferhabitatsandenvironmentalconditions.Rotifersmayoccurinall
typesoffreshwaterreservoirs,inbrackishandmarinewater,inwetlands,andin
moistsoil.
PEjLER(1995)dividedrotiferdwellingsintomacro-andmicrohabitats.
Thefirstincludeharmoniclakes,ponds,ArcticandAntarcticwaters,hotsprings,
hypertrophicandpollutedwaters,swamps,andacid,saline,astatic,ground,and
loticwatersaswellasoceansandsoil.Microhabitatsinthissystemincludemac-
rophytes(periphyticrotifers),openwater(planktonicrotifers),mineraldeposits
(psammon),organicsediments,andotherorganisms(parasiticandepizoicrotifers).
ThebestknownrotiferhabitatsinPolandincludelakesandponds,dominated
byeutrophicbodiesofwater.Bothinlakesandponds,speciescompositionin
thepelagialofalakeandtheopenwaterzoneinaponddiffersfromthatin
thelittoralofalakeandthevegetatedzoneinapond.Comparedtothepelagial,
thelacustrinelittoralaswellasthevegetatedzoneofapondarecharacterised
byahigherrotiferspeciesdiversity.Mostnumerousinthelacustrinepelagial
arerepresentativesofthefamiliesBrachionidae,Synchaetidae,Gastropodidae,
Asplanchnidae,andConochilidae.Generally,lacustrineandpondhabitatssupport
abundantrotiferfaunas.
Thosespeciesmostabundantandmostfrequentinthelacustrinepelagial
includeAnuraeopsisfissa,Ascomorphaecaudis,A.ovalis,Brachionusangularis,
Collothecamutabilis,Conochilushippocrepis,C.unicornis,Filinialongiseta,
Gastropusstylifer,Kellicottialongispina,Keratellacochlearis,K.quadrata,Pol-
yarthramajor,P
.remata,P
.vulgaris,Pompholyxsulcata,Trichocercacapucina,
T.similis,T.pusilla,andT.rousseleti.
