INTRODUCTION
ThecharacteristicfeatureofPolishtegumentologyknownaswell
asbookbindingstudiesisitsmarginalisationinthediscourseof
thehumanities.Despitethefactthatbookbindinganditsproducts
areanintegralcomponentofthehistoryofbooksandlibrariesas
wellasdecorativearts,literallydramaticlackofknowledgeofits
material-technical,organisational,historicalandalsoformal-stylistic
aspectsiscanbeobserved.Itisaccompaniedbythelackofcodified
tegumentologicalnomenclature,whosenaturalconsequenceister-
minologicalchaosthatconsiderablyslowsdown,andinsomefields
evenmakesresearchprogressimpossible.
Therearenumerousreasonsforthisstatusquo,howeverthe
leadingoneisarelativelypooravailabilityofbookbindingworks
inthecollectionsoflibraries,archivesormuseums.Inaddition,insti-
tutionalsetsofbindingsnotinfrequentlyincludethousandsoreven
dozensofthousandsobjects,whichappearstoalienateresearchers
fromenteringthisspaciousandenigmaticarea,whichusually
doesnotguaranteeanydiscoveries.Considerablesignicanceis
alsoatachedtothelocationofbindingsontheborderofspheres
ofinterestofbookstudiesandhistoryofart,whichgoeshandin
handwiththelackofdevelopedtraditionoftegumentologicalre-
searchinanyofacademiccentresinPoland.Alongwithobjective
dicultiesinvolvedinmeetingtherequirementofinterdisciplinary
natureofbookbindingstudies,itleadstoasignicantthinningout
ofthecircleofresearchersonbookbindings.Consequently,thelevel
ofknowledgeofPolishbookbindingcraft,itsindividualitiesand
