cationsseemtobeuniversallyapplicable.Thethirdpaper,“SocialConstraints
ofAspirationsforSecondLanguageAchievement”byJoannaRokita-Jaśkow,
seeksanexplanationfortherelativelyunambitiousandvagueaspirationsof
PolishvocationalschoolEnglishphilologystudents,addinganotherperspec-
tivetothediscussionontheroleoflearningenvironments.Theperspective
isnarroweddowntotheclassroomenvironmentinthefourthpaper,“New
School,theSameOldRut?ActionResearchofUnsuccessfulFirst-yearStudents
inaHighSchool”byJoannaMasoń-Budzyń.Inordertoformulateusefuland
experience-basedsuggestions,theauthorattemptstodiagnosethesourcesof
learners’unsuccessfulperformance,lookingatanumberofpotentialcontribut-
ingfactors.Thefiftharticle,“RethinkYourOldTeachingMethods:Designing
aPronunciationCourseforYoungTeenagers”byDorotaLipińska,alsofocuses
onaFLclassroomenvironment,buttheauthor’sinterestrevolvesaroundthe
issueofEFLpronunciationteachingto11-to13-year-olds.Lamentingtheineffi-
ciencyofboththeteachingresourcesandtheprimaryschoolsyllabi,theauthor
proposesherownideasabouthowpronunciationcouldbetaught,providingsome
suggestiveevidencefromspeechproductionandspeechperceptiontests.The
subjectofpronunciationlearningisalsothetopicofthelastpaperintheissue,
“PronunciationLearningEnvironment:EFLStudents’CognitionsofIn-class
andOut-of-classFactorsAffectingPronunciationAcquisition”byMagdalena
Szyszka.Theauthorattemptstoidentifythemostsignificantcontributorstothe
learners’ultimatepronunciationlearningachievement,lookingnotonlyatthe
classroomenvironmentandatteachers’pronunciation,butalsoatthepatterns
encounteredbythelearnersintheirdailyexposuretoentertainmentmedia.
Ifacommondenominatorweretobenotedforthepapersincludedinthe
presentissue,thedimensionofvariouslearningenvironmentswouldbeagood
candidate.Theauthorshaveattemptedtoshowinwhatwaythewidelyunder-
stoodcontextinwhichlearningandacquisitiontakesplaceexertsaninfluence
onlearners’ultimateL2performanceandsuccess.Wehopethatthisissue
willbeofinteresttoallresearchersworkinginthefieldofsecondlanguage
acquisition.Atthesametime,wewouldliketoinvitePolishandforeignaca-
demicstosharetheirscholarlyresearchwithusbysubmittingtheirworktothe
journalTheoryandPracticeofSecondLanguageAcquisition,publishedbythe
