Abstract
Thepresentarticlediscussesexamplesofexperimentaltechniquesofstudyingevents
withinnarratives.ThetheoreticalbasisisCognitiveLinguistics,andcognitivepsychology.
Thetermshorizontalandverticalwithregardtoeventandnarrativeconstrual,though
somewhatarbitrary,provideaframeworkforthediscussionofthemanypossibilities
thatexistintheexperimentalstudyofthistopic.Thetheoreticalconsiderationsthatare
foundationalforthearticlearediscussedinsectionsoneandtwo,followedbysection
threeontechniquesinthestudyofasingleevent,andsectionfourthatdealswithevents
astheyformthewholestorycoherence.

1.Introduction
CognitiveLinguisticsresearchimpliesacloserelationshipbetweenlanguageand
cognition.Hence,studyingpatternsoflanguageuseprovidesinformationabout
thewaythemindmakessenseofembodiedexperiences.Construal,acentral
conceptinthisinterdisciplinaryproject,isunderstoodasthehumanabilityto
presentexperienceinlanguageinmultiplewaysdependingonanumberof
variablesinextricablyconnectedwithdiscoursegoalsandplans.Thisworklooks
atthenarrative,andatitsmaincomponenttheevent,whereeventsequencesform
narratives.
Onegeneralmethodologyquestionthatfacesaresearcherinterestedinstudying
construaloperationsconcernsindependentvariablesatthelevelofasingleevent,
andatthediscourselevel,i.e.,wholestorycoherence.Forthepurposesofthis
paper,independentvariablesatthelevelofasingleeventwillbereferredtoasthe
horizontalaspectofconstrual,whereasthediscourselevelwillbereferredtoas
