Introduction

Syntaxandsemanticsaretraditionalareasofthestudyoflanguagerecognisedin

linguisticsandphilosophyoflanguage.Thisoverlapofresearchareasseemsto

besufcientmotivationforfacilitatingencounterofscholarsfromtheseﬁelds.

Obviously,linguistsandphilosophersdonotalwaysagreeontherangeoftheo-

reticalissuesincludedinthetwoabove-mentionedareas,keyconcepts,termino-

logicalanddeﬁnitionalproblems,researchmethodology,orempiricaldatataken

intoconsideration.Oneofimportantaspectsofthestudyofsyntaxandsemantics

istheveryneedtodistinguishbetweenthem,especiallygiventhatrecentlysome

linguists(e.g.cognitivelinguists)questionthemotivationforthedemarcation

betweensyntaxandsemantics.

Allofthematterslistedaboverunthroughthecontributionsgatheredinthe

presentvolume.Themajorgoalofthiscollectionistobringtogethertheeﬂorts

oflinguistsandphilosophers(representingdiﬂerentschoolsofthoughtwithinre-

spectivedisciplines)tryingtoexploreselectedtopicsinsyntaxandsemantics.The

mostobviouscontrastbetweenlinguisticsandphilosophyoflanguage-thepre-

occupationwiththemorphosyntacticdistributionofspeciﬁclinguisticelements

intheformerandstrivingforprecisesemanticanalysesthatabstractfromlan-

guage-particularmorphosyntacticdetailinthelatter-isstillvisibleinthepapers

presentedbelow.Yet,onecanobservesomedegreeofopennesstoinsightsfrom

philosophicalinvestigationonthepartoflinguistsandfromlinguisticresearchon

thepartofphilosophers.Thisopennessinvolves,amongotherthings,ingesting

theresultsofinvestigationintheotherﬁeld,employmentofterminologyoreven

4borrowing’somemethodsofresearch.

JanuszBadio’schapterisconcernedwithselectedwaysandexamplesof

investigatingeventsandtheirroleinwholenarratives.Fromthetheoreticalpoint

ofview,theauthor’sapproachisgroundedincognitivelinguisticsandcognitive

psychology.Badioemploysthetermshorizontalandverticaltopresentvarious

possibilitiesavailableintheexperimentalstudyofeventsandnarrative.Thedis-

cussionoftheoreticalissuesisfollowedbyanillustrationoftechniquesusedto
