Introduction

Controversies,sometimesbittercontroversies,areaninherent

elementofinternationalrelations.Conﬂictinginterests,differentvalues,

overlappingspheresofinﬂuencesłallthismakedisputesettlement

mechanismscrucialelementsofinternationalsystem.Searching

forcooperationmechanismsthatmayhelpinovercomingexisting

controversiesinAsiaisthemaintopicofthismonograph.

Themonographisbasedonthecasestudiesinwhichauthorsanalyse

disagreementsaswellascollaborationsbetweendifferentactorsinAsia.

Theyarechosendifferentpointofviewsthatmightberoughlydivided

intotwogroups.Theﬁrstsetofauthorstriestolookatregionaloreven

internalproblemsthathaveinternationalimpact.Thesecondgroupgives

anoutlookonthecontroversieslinkedtorisingglobalpresenceofAsian

countries,inparticularChina.

Theopeningchapter,writtenbyRussianscholarDmitryKuznetsov,

describesthephenomenonofrisingChinesenationalisminthecontext

oftheforeignrelations.Thisprocessis,atleastpartially,controlledby

thePRCauthorities,whotrytouseitfortheirpoliticalpurposes.In

particulargrowinganti-Americanandanti-Japanesesentimentsmightbe

instrumentallyusedbytheChineseCommunistParty.

Thesecondchapter,byAgnieszkaBatko,presentstheJapanesepolicy

oflWomenomics’.Thisidea,partofthefamouslAbenomics’,concentrates

onpersuadingJapanesewomentoactmoreactivelyonthejobmarketand

seekfortheopportunitiestoadvancetheircareers.Thishighlycontroversial

ideaposesaseriesofevidentchallengestothetraditionalconceptoftherole

ofwomeninJapanesesociety.However,whatisevenmoreimportant,itis

acrucialpartofAbe’sreformpackageanditssuccessorfailurewillhavethe

consequencesforJapanesepositionintheregionandintheworld.

InthenextchapterKarolŻakowskianalysesthereasonsoffailure

inestablishingastableframeworkforSino-Japanesesecuritycooperation

aftertheendofColdWar

.Theauthorarguesthatbothcountrieshave

beenunabletodevelopafull-ﬂedgedcooperationinthesecurityﬁeld

duetohistoryproblems,contrastingvisionsofregionalsecuritysystem,

territorialdisputesandrivalryforleadershipinEastAsia.
