Apartfromdiscovering,classifying,describingandcomparingOldEnglish
ambivalentclauses,weaimatmeasuringtheextentoftheinfluencecarried
bytheirdualanalysisontheoverallpictureofsurfacewordorderinboth
manuscriptsoftheAnglo-SaxonChronicle.Ithasbeendemonstratedthatthe
resultsoftheanalysissubstantiallydifferdependingonwhethertheambivalent
clausesareapproachedfromthepointofviewofparataxisandtreatedasmain
orfromthepointofviewofhypotaxisandtreatedasdependent.Therefore,it
issignificanthowtheseclausesareapproached.1
Bywritingthisbook,wealsointendtoencouragecreationofinnovative
researchtoolsandmethods,aswellastopromotecorpuslinguistics,inwhich
therearestillmanyunresolvedproblemsandopenquestions.
Insum,weaimatfulfillingthefollowingobjectives:
a)creationofaresearchmethodologyforthephenomenonofpara-hypotaxis,
b)creationofatypologyofpara-hypotacticclauses,
c)developmentandpromotionofdiachroniccorpuslinguistics.
Lastbutnotleast,wedonotfollowanyestablishedlinguisticmodelbut
ratherassumeatheory-neutraleclecticapproachandthusourbookisdirected
tobothmodel-orientedandnotmodel-orientedreaders.
Thestructureofthebook
InChapter1wediscussthestateoftheart.Atthebeginningweconcentrate
onsomenotionsrelatedtocorpuslinguisticssuchascorpuscomposition,
annotation,corpussizeandrepresentativeness.Thenthewell-knownand
influentialdiachroniccorporaofEnglish,bothannotatedandunannotated,are
discussed.Afterwards,wefocusontheproblemofparataxisandhypotaxis,
whicharesyntacticphenomenathataredefinedindifferentwaysbydifferent

hypotaxisinquestion(thoughwedidnotusethetermpara-hypotaxisthen),butourviews
concerningitwereveryvagueandfarfrombeingsystematicordetailed.Webrieflydiscussed
thisproblemonlytheoreticallywithoutputtingourideasintopractice.Althoughatthattime
wewereawareoftheexistenceofambivalenceincertainOldEnglishclauses,sofarinour
analysiswehavetreatedthemnotasambivalentbutasunambivalent,andanalysedthem
likethat.Nevertheless,wesuggestedthattheproblemmightbetreatedinamoresystematic
wayinthefuture;whichwearedoingnowbyisolatingpara-hypotaxisanddealingwithitas
aseparatecategory.Asregardsotherauthors,tothebestofourknowledgeasimilarclassification,
description,annotationandanalysisofthepara-hypotaxiswearedealingwithherehasnotbeen
proposedyet.
