12Introduction
Whenwestartresearch,weusuallypreparetheconceptualization
oftheresearchandwereviewtheliteraturetocreateabasisforour
scientificendeavourandtorefertotheexistingknowledge.Thereview
oftheexistingknowledgehassomefeaturesofcontemplation;however,
itisnotexactlycontemplation.Theconceptualizationoffutureresearch
providesforthecategorizationoftheapproachestotheproblem,and
categorizationofthemaindefinitionsofthephenomenaunderstudy.
Weusuallylookforerrorsandomissionsinthepreviousresearch
andanalysis.Usuallyourmethodologyisbasedontheassumption
thatweshouldlookforerrorsandourprofessionalobligationisto
correctthemandimprovetheproceduresandconceptsoftheresearch
toapproachandattainbetterconclusions.However,inthiswaywe
followthesameassumptions,similarconcepts,andmethodological
proceduresandwedonotquestiontheassumptionsoftheexisting
knowledge.Wedonotsufficientlycontemplatethestateoftheresearch
andoftheresearcher’sselfinordertounderstandhowweareshaped
bythepast,bythesituation,andbytheinternalconversationofthe
selfthatistheproductandtheactivecomponentofthesituationin
theWorldinwhichthepersonisthrownatsomehistoricalmoment.
Deepcontemplationofthesituationcouldbetheepistemological
choiceforsocialscientists.Itisafundamentallydifferentapproachto
theresearch,wheretheinvestigatorisresearchingtheobjectbutalso
thesituationofresearchandher-self/him-self.Contemplatingisadual
wayoftheapproachingthetruth.Itdoesnotmeanthattheresearcher
ismentallydivided;justtheopposite,shewantstobecompleteand
achievetheunityofbeingasaresearcher-humanbeingandanelement
ofthesituation(psycho-socialandhistorical).Theresearcherwhouses,
forexample,participantobservationforherresearchisobservingthe
activitiesandsocialsituationsoftheparticipants.However,sheisalso
undertheinfluenceofthesituationsandactivitiesoftheobserved
participants(Rowan1981).HerIobservationspectacles’arecreated
bythehistoricalmomentandbytheactualsituation.Contemplating
enablesresearcherstoseehowthemindworksandcreatestheimages
andreportsfromthefield-whatisavailableforthemindandwhatis
silentorrepressedbecauseofthedominatingrhetoricofdescription
andrhetoricoffeeling?Thedominantemotionsaredifferentin
differenthistoricalmomentsandsituations(Elias1994).Empathyand
sympathyusuallyfollowthesocially-acceptedandavailablerhetoric.
Contemplationoftheserelationsofthesituation,rhetoric,mind
andselfshowshowthesituationisco-producedbytheresearcher.
Contemplationisnotonlyanalysis,itisalsoanethicalchoiceof
stoppinghereandnowtoseethesituationclearlyandreportingitwith
