thewell-beingofthewholesociety/societies.TheBuddhistapproach
totheeconomyisconnectedwithpro-socialvalues,compassionand
conceptofhappiness.
Thefourthchapterexaminesthetopic:Canwelearnabouttheart
oflivingfromsociology?Sociologyteachesusthatwearethepartof
abroadergroupcalledsociety.Wearetaughtthatthatsocietyshould
befirstdescribedinordertobeunderstoodand/orexplained,andthat
thecognitivefunctionisthemostimportantpartinunderstandingthe
rolesociologyshouldplayinademocraticandmodernsociety.Isthis
understanding(cognition)enough?Howcanwegetmoretobetterour
qualityoflifeandliveawholesomelifefromstudyingsociologyorsociety
usingasociologicalperspective?Issociologyatoolfortheartofliving
oritisjusttheplayofHsophisticated”intellectuals?Inthischapter
weanalysetheapproachesofRobertMerton,GeorgeH.Mead,and
AnthonyGiddens.Wealsoreconstructthestructuralconditionsofthe
artoflivingandhappiness,analysingtheconceptofgreedyinstitutions
byLewisCoser.Weanalyticallyconnectthestructuralconditionsof
workincontemporarygreedyinstitutions(workingonprojects)with
thelossofontologicalsecurity.Weanalysethedisplacementofthe
meaningofwork,career,autonomy,timestructure,identity,privacy
andhappiness.WetrytouseaBuddhistinspirationtoanalyzeissuesof
sufferingand,associatedwithit,socalledIontologicalinsecurity’and
thewelfareoftheindividualand/orsociety.
The
fifth
chapter
describes
and
analyses
an
ethno-Zenic
experimentconsistingofstandingmotionlessinpublicplaces(for
example,attheentrancetoashoppingmall,infrontofapetrolstation,
abank,ashop,oronastreetcorner).Theresearchwasinspiredby
anethnomethodologicalapproachtolivedorderandpsychological
knowledge-derivedfromBuddhism-onhowthemindworks.Some
inspirationsfromsymbolicinteractionismwerealsoadopted.The
experimentwasaimedinthefirstinstanceatdiscoveringthebasic
assumptionsunderlyingoureverydayactivities.Asecondandmore
importantgoalwastodeconstructtheworkofthemind,especially
withregardtotheprocessofthelooking-glassselfandofIproducing’
emotions.Thechapteralsodiscussestheself-studymethod(ethno-
