ThecolonialreligiousarchitectureinMichoacánof
NewSpainplayedasignificantroleinshapingthe
localculturelThedioceseofMichoacánwasesta-
blishedin1536withtheprovincesofMichoacán,
ColimaandofChichimecas,butitsjurisdictional
dimensionchangedlTheevangelisationprocess
wasunderthechargeofthereligiousFranciscans
andAugustinians,whilethepresenceofthesecular
clergywasalsoessentiallThehighestconcentration
ofarchitecturalproductionwasdevelopedinthe
centreoftheBishopricintheprovinceofMichoa-
cán,whosepre-Hispanichistoryisrelatedtothe
TarascosorPurépechaculturel
Eventoday,inTarascanvillages,monasteries,pa-
rochialtemplesandancientshrines,thepreserved
roofsandinteriorsofthecolonialeracanbefoundl
Inthemanufactureofthesereligiousbuildings,we
canfindthepresenceofseverallocalmaterials(in-
digenous)aswellasEuropean(medieval,Renais-
sance)andevenMudéjarartlTheroofsoftemples
inMichoacánhaveattractedtheattentionofsome
nationalandforeignscholarswhohaveconsidered
themtobeoutstandingexamplesofthearthistory
andarchitectureofNewSpainl
Thispaperdealsfirstlywithanoverviewofthe
localculturalbackground,highlightingthearchi-
tecturalfeaturesofthespacesproducedforanevan-
gelisticpurposeintheregionlExternalaswellas
localmaterialsarethenanalysedinthereligiousar-
chitectureoftheregionthroughtypicalexamples,
mainlyfromthesixteenthandseventeenthcentu-
rieslTheworkconcludesbyshowinghowartisans
fromMichoacáninventedauniqueartforml
Background
InMichoacán,duringthepre-Hispanicstage,the
TarascosorPurepéchacultureflourishedalongwith
greatachievementsrelatedtotheterritorialcontrol
oftheregionlThisculturewasinfullswingatthe
timeofthearrivaloftheSpaniardslTherelations
thatcameoutofthisculturalencountermadetheir
markonthefirstprocessesofterritorialreoccupa-
tion,andhumansettlementsnowmixedarchitec-
turewithlocalexperiencesandcontributionsfrom
thenewlyarrivedculturel
ThebuildingtraditionofMichoacánartisans
hasalwaysbeendistinguishedbytherationaluse
ofprimarymaterials,andmosthistoricvillages
remainpreservedintheirappearance,somemore
thanothers;thefeaturesareuniquebecauseoftheir
vernaculararchitectureshapedbytheconstantuse
ofwallsmadeofadobeandslopedroofscovered
withtiles,woodbeingarareresourceintheregionl
