Theexchangeofculturesthataroseduringthe16th
centurythatbroughtthenativepre-Hispanicsocie-
tiesfacetofacewithcustomsandpracticesbrought
fromtheIberianpeninsulawerethebasisforthe
consolidationofthenewculturecalledNewSpain,
withtheimpositionofCatholicismthroughthe
evangelisationofthenatives,oneofthephenom-
enathatleftadeepmarkontheterritoryandthe
conqueredsocietyl
WiththearrivalofthefirstFranciscanfriars,
andlatertheAugustiniansandDominicans,began
aconstructivedevelopmentfocusedonproducing
areligiousarchitecturethatwouldincludeappro-
priatespacesforinstructingIndiansonChristian
principlesandbeliefs,aswellasforthecelebration
ofmassesandsacramentsthatwereconsideredman-
datorytraininglThisarchitecturaldevelopment
generatedsacredprecinctsofaverydiversenature
ineachoneoftheregionsevangelised,characteristi-
callyreproducedintheMichoacánterritoryl
Thechroniclesandsurvivingmanuscriptsdate
backtothearrivalofthefirstfriarsbelongingtothe
OrderoftheobservantFranciscanstoTzintzuntzan
in1525-themostimportanturban,politicaland
ceremonialcentreoftheUnitedP´urhepechain
MichoacánlReligiousmissionariesremainedinthe
townforaboutayearinordertolearnthelanguage
andlocalcustomsbeforeanyactualevangelicalwork
started,afterwhichtheyexpandedtheirteachings
tootherplacesinthevicinityofLakePátzcuarol
TheprocessoffoundingprimitiveChristian
populationswasfocusedmainlyonindigenous
peoplescatteredinpredeterminedspacesthathad
experiencedapre-Hispanicoccupation,usuallylo-
catedinmountainsandhillslThefirstprovisional
chapelswerebuiltthereusingmaterialsfromthe
region,providingafledglingcatholicinstructionl
However,until1529mostofthesesettlementswere
movedtothelowerpartsofthevalleystofacilitate
communicationbetweenthepopulationsandexer-
ciseagreaterHispaniccontrolovertheinhabitants

theRoyalfavourthatwasgrantedtothevillageof

hillofSanMateodelaCruz,whereasAntoniode
Carvajalhadreportedthepresenceofsixhousesin
1524atthesiteknownasViramangarum,which
intheP´urhépechalanguagemeans"placeofstone
slab"
