IthinkwecanassumethatBeniowskiwasreasonablypleasedwithhis
posting.Treasurygraduatesmayhavebeenabletoconveyinformallysome
preferencesabouttheplaceandformoftheircompulsoryservice,butitis
notclearhowfarthisinfluencedthefinaldecisions.Militaryservicewasonthe
wholethepreferredformofredeemingthescholarshipbond,andwasfor
theintellectualandphysicalelite;thoseinworsehealthweredesignatedfor
civilianserviceinthefar-flungreachesoftheEmpire.
