Foreword
Theprincipalaimofthisworkistoreflectupontheprocessesof
socio-culturalchangefromtheperspectiveoftrustanduncertainty
conceivedascorrelatestoevolvingformsofsocio-culturalorganisations.
Itispostulatedthattechnological,economicandpoliticaltransforma-
tions(asembodiedbyindustrialisation,thespreadoffreemarkets
anddemocratisation)arefactorswhoseimpactisinstrumentalasfar
asthedevelopmentofinterpersonaltrustrelationsisconcerned.In
otherwords,modernisationpavesthewayforchangestakingplacein
theselectionofculturalelements(e.g.ideologies,valuesordiscourses)
whichmakessocialrealityappearasanorganised,predictableand,
therefore,trustworthysystem.Thesameculturalrepertoireoftrust
isappliedtothecollectiveprocessofcopingwithsocialtraumasand
uncertainties,suchasthelossofdomesticationortheerosionoftradi-
tions,whichcomeinthewakeoftechnological,economicorpolitical
change.
Modernisationprocessesproducetwodistinctkindsoftrustcul-
tures,thatisculturalsystemssustainingandreinforcingpersonalised
trustrelations.TheformerisassociatedwiththeculturalHregime”of
pre-modernityinwhichtrustingisbaseduponstructuralresources,
suchasfixedroleexpectations,establishedinteractionpaternsandthe
unquestionableauthorityoftradition.Thismodeloftrustcultureisbest
illustratedbytheinstitutionoftheHKulaRing”whichdenotesasystem
ofceremonial,ritualactivitiesaimingattheexchangeofsymbolicarte-
factsamongtribal,statelesscommunitiesoftheTriobriandarchipelago.
Thelatersystemisrelatedto(late)modernityinwhichtrustingis
basedupontheindividual’spersonalreflexivityandagency,thatis
theabilitytomakeinformedchoicesunderconditionsofideological,
normativeandaxiologicalmultiplicity.Thislatermodeloftrustculture
istypicalofinformationalnetworksinwhichreciprocityisaprojectin
progressthatneedstobenegotiatedandimplementedbyallparties
engagedinonlineinteractions.
Theaforementionedargumentisconceptuallydividedintosix
chapters.Fourofthemcomprisemethodologicalandtheoreticalprob-
lemsreferringtobothuncertaintyandtrustaswellassocialontology
(thestructure/agencydichotomy).Thetheoreticalandmethodological
remarksareconcludedbythemodelofHtheoreticalperformance”which
isintroducedasanoriginalmethodologicalframeworkforcultural
analysis.Theremainingtwochaptersareinterpretativeprojectsaiming
toanalysemodernisationprocessesfromtheperspectiveoftheapplied
methodologicalframeworkanditsconceptualtoolbox.
