centricbehavior.hiscollectionhasitsonsetin
MyszkowiceestatenearTarnopol.Since1857,tak-
ingJózefOssolińskiasanexample,:aworowski
aspiredtoopenanentail2.In1861:aworowski
placedhisbookcollectioninaninheritedbuild-
ingoftheformerSieniawskiArsenalinLviv,
whereheestablishedasortoflibrary-museum
which,apartfrompreciousPolishmaterial,held
alsotheSlavicone,aswellasaprintcollection,
sculptures,paintings,andotherrelicsofthe
formercultureoftheRepublicofPoland.Owing
totheassistanceofferedbyawell-knowncollec-
torAleksander:atawski,:aworowskiobtained
wholebookcollectionsormostvaluablefrag-
ments,particularlythoseconcerningthehistory
ofPoland,amongothers,collectionsofAlekas-
anderandStanisławStadnickiofŻmigród,Ewar-
ystandJózefKuropatnicki,AmbrożyGrabowski,
AlojzyOsiński,KazimierzStronczyński,Leon
DembowskiofKlimontowice,DionizyZubrzycki,
andJanWincenty:andtkie-Stężyński.In1856
thelibraryhadsixthousandPolishWorks,three
thousandforeignones,aswellasfivehundred
manuscripts.3henrykSchmitt,whobeganwork-
ingonacatalogueofengravingsandtheregula-
tionsofthebookcollection,tookcareofthem.
Schmitt’sworkwascontinuedbyotherlibrarians,
WojciechKętrzyńskiamongothers,whoregis-
teredhistoriographicworksinthecollection,as
wellasworksbyStanisławOrzechowski,Szymon
Starowolski,sermonsandfuneralspeeches,and
alsoworksongrammarandlexicology,literature,
theology,andherbaria.
In1894,afterthedeathofthefounder,thecol-
lectionheld15,571oldprints,andoveronethou-
sandmanuscripts,particularlyinbelles-lettres,
politics,law,liturgy,theology,andmathematics
andnaturalsciences,which-asidefromother
sources-camefromprivatecollections.Inhis
willfrom1881:aworowskibequeathedtheli-
braryto“thepropertyofthelandofGaliciaand
Lodomeria,”whiletheestablishedLibraryofthe
CountWiktor:aworowskiFoundationinLvivbe-
cameadministratedbytheNationalDepartment
(aunitoftheDietoftheKingdomofGalicia).
In1914,acollectionofcountZygmuntCzar-
necki4,thegrandsonofthelibrary’sfounder
(1905),anincisorRegniAntoniCzarnecki,was
purchased(for180thousandmarks,withaprovi-
sionofindivisibility),holding6,435workscom-
ingfromvariouscollections,forexample,from
castellan:ielińskiorAleksyPrusinowski.This
collectionconsistedinthirty-eightincunabula,
onethousandandahalfofoldprints,numerous
manuscriptsonthePolishlaw,history,books
onmathematicsandastronomy,religiousprints
(acollectionoftheoldestmissalsoftheCracow
andPoznańdioceses,aswellascopiesofthe
holy:ible,actsofsynods).Amongthem,there
werevaluableanduniqueprints,whichconcerned
religiousmattersinPolandandabroad,especially
polemicanddissidentliterature.
Intheyear1900,theLibraryCountWiktor
:aworowskiFoundation,afterhavingbeenmade
accessibletothepublic,becameasignificantre-
searchcenter(since1901itfunctionedunder
RudolfKotulamanagement5).
Underoccupation,thelibrarycollectionsdis-
seminated-theywereincludedintotheLviv
:ranchoftheLibraryoftheAcademyofSci-
