givenme,butIdon,tidentifywiththem,because,regardlessofwheretheywere

living,asthewivesofBritishofficerstheywereconnectedtoanestablished

system.ThetypeofpioneerexperiencethatIfindIidentifywithwouldbemuch

rougher,muchtougher,eventhanRoughingItintheBush.

Ithinkthattherearemanyotherpioneerstoriesthatneedtobetoldin

Canada:storiesconcerningPolishpioneers,Ukrainianpioneers,Swedishpio-

neers,Icelandicpioneers,andofcourse,Frenchpioneers.Theimmigrantexpe-

rienceinCanadaisastoryofdislocationmorethananythingelse,sothatI

wouldsaythatpeoplefromAfricaarrivinglastweekarepioneersinthesame

waythatmyIrishancestorswerepioneers.Theexperienceofmigrationunitesus
