perienceanddescriptionofreality,asonemakesnosensewithouttheoth-
er.Alldescriptionsaretemporary,andinevitablyhistorical,biased,experi-
entialandinterpretative.Terefore,aliterarytextisnotgivenonceandfor
all,butitisbeingconstantlyre-interpretedaccordingtoinstitutionalcon-
ventions,vocabulariesandreaders’opinions.Asthereisnoabsolutetruthof
thetexttobefound,atrueinterpretationisitsmostpersuasivere-descrip-
tion,notnecessarilybasedonananywayimpossibleabsoluteadequa-
cytoatextitself.Teonlytruthvalidatorsofthoughtsandideasareuben-
eficialinteractions”withtheworldandotherpeople.Buddhism,however,
seemstobeevenmorepracticalthanpragmatisminitssearchforanulti-
matebeneficialinteraction:
IndiscussingPeirce’swritingsonthenatureofscienceandscientif-

scienceisdistinctivelythestudyofuselessthings’.TeBuddhistphi-

terestedinlearningforthesheerjoyofdiscovery,andthescientific
mentalitywouldbeapoorchoiceforapersondeterminedtoachieve
nirvdn

Terefore,fromtheBuddhistperspectivetruthisnotmerelywhatcanbe
philosophicallypersuadedtoothers,sincehistoryclearlyshowspropagan-
dacanconvincepeopletoperformalsonon-meritoriousactivities,butitis
rathertheliberatinginfluenceonanindividualresultinginanultimateben-
eficialinteractiontheexperienceoftruthcalledenlightenment.
TepracticalapplicationofBuddhismtoliteraturestudies,anditsrela-
tiontoethics,willbeanalyzedinchapterthree.Itwillshowthatevencon-
sideringinevitabledifferencesbetweenWesternliterarystudiesandBud-
dhistphilosophy,amarriageofthetwoispossible,andevenmightprove
beneficialforboth.
