terglessum,atermusedforamberbythetribeofAestii,asdescribedbyTacitus,

andSTAnTiEniTEandBECKERiTEafterthenamesofthefoundersoftheStantien

&Beckercompany,whichusedtomineandcraftamberontheSambianPenin-

sula.In1970,theoutstandingRussianamberexpertfromLeningrad(nowSankt

Petersburg)SviatoslavSavkevichgavethenameofgEDAno-SuCCiniTEtoaresin

foundtogetherwithsuccinitedepositsinRussia.

InMiddleGermany

,thenamesofSiEgBuRgiTE(afterthecityofSiegburg)and

goiTSCHiTE(aftertheGoitscheambermine)werecoined.Apartfromstantienite,

nootherblackfossilresinwhichaccompaniessucciniteinallitsdeposits(inthe

largestquantitiesatBitterfeld)hasreceiveditsownmineralname.

OutsideoftheareawhereBalticamberiswidespread,morethanonehun-

dredotherfossilresinshavebeenfound,researched,describedandnamedby

theirdiscoverersovertheyears.Inoldjewelleryonecanﬁndpiecesmadeof

SiMETiTE(Sicilianamber)andRoMAniTE(fossilresinfromRomaniaorSakhalin).

OldﬁgurativeambersculptureanddecorationsweremostoftenmadeofBuRMiTE,

afossilresinminedinBurma(nowMyanmar)andcraftedinChina.

Newkindsoffossilresinsaredeterminedonthebasisoftheirorigin,which

oftencorrespondstovariousspeciesofambersecretingtrees,theirdifferentproper-

tiesanddifferentchemismldependentontheconditionsandenvironmentofsedi-

mentation.Researchersofolddidnotalwaysrealisethatsuchdifferencesexisted.

LookingforamberontheBalticbeachesorﬁshingforitinthesea,oreven

(asdemonstratedmorerecently)miningitintheSambianminesalsoyieldsother

resins,ontopoftheaccompanyingones.Likeamber,thesepiecesarelightweight,

yellowandverydifferenttothetouchthanScandinaviancobblestonesgathered

onthebeach.Theseresinsaregivenvariousnamesthataresometimesmore

andsometimeslessaccurate.Forthelocalambergatherersitisyoungamber

ordarkercolophonythatisalmoststilltacky.Vendors,however,sellthesepieces
