16.1ThePhariseesandSadduceescame,andtestinghim,askedhim
toshowthemasignfromheaven.16.2Butheansweredthem,“When
itisevening,yousay,‘Itwillbefairweather,fortheskyisred.’16.3
Inthemorning,‘Itwillbefoulweathertoday,fortheskyisredand
threatening.’Hypocrites!Youknowhowtodiscerntheappearance
ofthesky,butyoucan’tdiscernthesignsofthetimes!16.4Aneviland
adulterousgenerationseeksafterasign,andtherewillbenosigngiven
toit,exceptthesignoftheprophetJonah.”
Heleftthem,anddeparted.16.5Thedisciplescametotheothersideand
hadforgottentotakebread.16.6Jesussaidtothem,“Takeheedand
bewareoftheyeastofthePhariseesandSadducees.”
16.7Theyreasonedamongthemselves,saying,“Webroughtnobread.”
16.8Jesus,perceivingit,said,“Whydoyoureasonamongyourselves,
youoflittlefaith,‘becauseyouhavebroughtnobread?’16.9Don’tyou
yetperceive,neitherrememberthefiveloavesforthefivethousand,
andhowmanybasketsyoutookup?16.10Northesevenloavesforthe
fourthousand,andhowmanybasketsyoutookup?16.11Howisitthat
youdon’tperceivethatIdidn’tspeaktoyouconcerningbread?But
bewareoftheyeastofthePhariseesandSadducees.”
16.12Thentheyunderstoodthathedidn’ttellthemtobewareofthe
yeastofbread,butoftheteachingofthePhariseesandSadducees.16.13
NowwhenJesuscameintothepartsofCaesareaPhilippi,heaskedhis
disciples,saying,“WhodomensaythatI,theSonofMan,am?”
16.14Theysaid,“SomesayJohntheBaptizer,some,Elijah,andothers,
Jeremiah,oroneoftheprophets.”
16.15Hesaidtothem,“ButwhodoyousaythatIam?”
16.16SimonPeteranswered,“YouaretheChrist,theSonoftheliving
God.”
16.17Jesusansweredhim,“Blessedareyou,SimonBarJonah,forflesh
andbloodhasnotrevealedthistoyou,butmyFatherwhoisinheaven.
16.18IalsotellyouthatyouarePeter,[Peter’sname,PetrosinGreek,
isthewordforaspecificrockorstone.]andonthisrock[Greek,
petra,arockmassorbedrock.]Iwillbuildmyassembly,andthegates
ofHades[or,Hell]willnotprevailagainstit.16.19Iwillgivetoyouthe
