alsoapartofSilesia,totheHabsburgMonarchy.Tebothnationstateshave
muchincommonaswellasdiferinmanyrespects.Teyunderwentmoderni-
zation,nationalization,experiencedtheperiodofsocialism,andfinallyfound
themselvesinawhirlwindofglobalizationandanewsocialreality.
CommonmembershipintheCommunistBloc,andthenthesystemictrans-
formation,maintainedtheanalogousfatesofthebothnations,whichareim-
printedontheconsciousnessoftheirsocieties.Atthesametime,historicaldif-
ferencesalsooccurred,suchasbetweentheaccomplishmentsofJanHusandthe
Counter-ReformationinPoland.TeresultisdiferentapproachesofPolesand
Czechstoreligion.
Teperiodofsystemictransformation,openingtotheoutsideworldandthe
processesofglobalizationhavecausedaninfluxofnewtrends,stylesandthe
Westernvalues.Itconcernstheinhabitantsofthebothcountries,especiallythe
youngergeneration.Teperiodinquestionallowedthemtoexploretheiriden-
tity,particularlyintermsofethnicityandreligion.Suchprocessesoccurredin
boththePolishandtheCzechcommunities.
Socio-economictransformationinthelasttwodecadesaccountsforamajor
changeinlifestyle.Forsociologists,asocialchangeisamajorchallengewhich
givestheopportunitytomonitormanyaspectsofsociety.Whatisparticularly
interestingisobservingchangesinborderareas.
Teaimofthispublicationistopresentthechangesinpublicawarenesson
bothsidesoftheborder(inSilesiaandMoravia),asthesimilaritiesanddifer-
encesaremoreapparentthere.Tesechangesrelateprimarilytotheyounger
